MDM Pilot Installation information

From GEANT2-JRA1 Wiki

The page contains the information and actions needed to accomplish the "Identify where to install the HW " and "Based on GPS installation proc, get a quote for GPS installation and send it to DANTE" actions from the MDM workplan.

Actions:

  • Identify where to install the BWCTL MP (requiring GPS antenna) - 9th of March (so that we can order the GPS antenna)
    • If there are already installed GPS antenna, please tell Erlangen (win-labor at dfn.de) the type of antenna and the type of signal send (e.g. PPS).
      • Note that if the already installed antenna is not a Meinberg antenna, it is more difficult to re-use the signal than to install a new antenna.
    • Ask for a quote for the GPS antenna installation and for the cabling (RG58, max. 250 m length) from the roof to the place where you wish to install the BWCTL MP server.
    • Send the quote to Dante for approval - 28th of March
    • Ideally, the server should be installed in an important location for your network (main node or close to your most important customers).
    • Ideally the servers should be connected as much as possible straight to a router or to a local switch connected to the routers (beware of the load on the switch or on the switch internal limitation which limits the traffic on one port to 600 Mbps. This would weaken the BWCTL tests).
  • Identify where to install the other servers - 1st of March
    • As they do not perform active measurement, their location is less important. Ensure that there is sufficient connectivity to it (high availability and bandwidth).
  • Allocate IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

It has to be noted that

  • the servers are not provided with a "cable management arm" unless you request one before the 2nd of March.
  • Apart from the Bee servers (BWCTL), all the SUN servers will be sent with "Slide rail kit". If you don't need those, please let us know before the 2nd of March.
  • For the NRENs installing themselves their web-services, they can chose the OS on which they wish to support the tools. (please note that the recommended OS is Linux RedHat).

Web-Service HW Specs Interfaces Ports to open Power socket Other
BWCTL MP
  • 3U high - high H 140 mm * W 480 mm * D 660 mm (approx.), 19" rack mount
  • One remote management card (100 Mbps connection sufficient)
  • One Fast/GigabitEthernet Ports (100 Mbps port sufficient for delay measurements)
  • One GigabitEthernet Ports for BWCTL (copper)
  • One RS232 port
  • Remote Management interface: https-access to network 131.188.81.0/24
  • Hades interface: ssh-access (data aquisition) to network 131.188.81.0/24 and to 193.174.75.195 (radagast.x-win.dfn.de, the data storage server). For the measurements, the UDP ports 50000 and above must be open to 0.0.0.0
  • BWCTL interface: control port 4823, iperf measurement ports > 5000
  • Server: a german "Schuko" style jack on one end and a three-pole jack on the other (see install instructions)
  • eRIC card - double-pole Euro-style jack on one side and a small double-pole jack on the other
GPS antenna installation procedure can be found here.
L2 status MP
  • sunfire X4200
  • 2U - high H 87.6 mm * W 425.5 mm * D 641 mm
  • One Ethernet/Fast/GigabitEthernet Ports (10 Mbps port and bandwidth sufficient)
  • One RS232 port
  • Open the Tomcat port tcp 8080 (or another choosen port by the machine administrator) to/from the workstation to/from the rest of the world.
  • Open SSH (tcp/udp 22) for the administrators/maintainers.
  • Open the port required to allow the L2 status to access the network equipment (NMS, SDH switches, SNMP, etc).

SSH/Telnet MP
  • sunfire x2200
  • 1U - H 43 mm * W 425.5 mm * D 633.7 mm
  • One Ethernet/Fast/GigabitEthernet Ports (10 Mbps port and bandwidth sufficient)
  • One RS232 port
  • Open the Tomcat port tcp 8080 (or another choosen port by the machine administrator) to/from the workstation to/from the rest of the world.
  • Open SSH (tcp/udp 22) for the administrators/maintainers.
  • Feature not released yet: Open SNMP (161/udp SNMP, potentially 162/udp SNMPTRAP ) to the network equipment of the network (to/from)
One (server)
RRD MA
  • sunfire X4200
  • 2U - high H 87.6 mm * W 425.5 mm * D 641 mm
  • One Ethernet/Fast/GigabitEthernet Ports (10 Mbps port and bandwidth sufficient)
  • One RS232 port
  • Open the Tomcat port 8080 (or the choosen port) to/from the workstation to/from the rest of the world.
  • Open SSH (tcp/udp 22) for the administrators/maintainers.
  • If the RRD is synchronised with rsync, this is done over SSH, open port tcp/udp 22 to the IP where the operational RRD is located.
  • If the RRD is the operational one, then all the port required to update the RRD must be open (e.g. SNMP, etc).
One (server)
  • The RRD MA web-service need to be on the same machine than a RRD.
    • The RRD can be the operational one (thus the collection scrip running locally need to access the routers via SNMP) or
    • The RRD is a replication of the operational one (then the port used by the replication system -rsync- must be opened).
SQL MA
  • sunfire X4200
  • 2U - high H 87.6 mm * W 425.5 mm * D 641 mm
  • One Ethernet/Fast/GigabitEthernet Ports (10 Mbps port and bandwidth sufficient)
  • One RS232 port
  • Open the Tomcat port 8080 (or the choosen port) to/from the workstation to/from the rest of the world.
  • Open SSH (tcp/udp 22) for the administrators/maintainers.
  • If the SQL database is the operational one, ports allowing the retrieval of the data to and from the network equipment must be opened (e.g. SNMP, etc).
  • If the SQL is a replicated one (synchronised), ports allowing the synchronisation xxx to/from the IP where the operational SQL DB is located should be opened.
One (server)
  • The SQL MA doesn't need to be on the same machine than a SQL DB.
LS
  • sunfire X4200
  • 2U - high H 87.6 mm * W 425.5 mm * D 641 mm
  • One Ethernet/Fast/GigabitEthernet Ports (10 Mbps port and bandwidth sufficient)
  • One RS232 port
  • Open the Tomcat port tcp 8080 (or another choosen port by the machine administrator) to/from the workstation to/from the rest of the world. It may be that several port might be opened.
  • Open SSH (tcp/udp 22) for the administrators/maintainers.
