September 2004 report
Two JRA1 Work-Items started from PM1, WI1 - Requirement and WI2 - Design. The two other Work-Items (WI3 - Implementation and WI4 - Evaluation) starts at a later stage. The work within WI1 and WI2 is carried out by sub-group to which a task is allocated. Several tasks of those two WI started their work on PM1. The workplans for those tasks were specified and the other tasks workplan are under discussion.
The first task to start by PM1 is the "Requirement Report" task. This task sent three questionnaires to the NRENs. Each questionnaire targets a different type monitoring infrastructure user: the NRENs, the projects making use of the networks and the end-users (through their first level of support). The NRENs were in charge of forwarding those questionnaires to the appropriated groups. These questionnaires aim at understanding the requirements of all the partners, identify services implemented on the networks and the monitoring tools currently deployed. At the end of September, 10 questionnaires answers were already received.
The "State-of-the-art" task aims at gathering and describing the strong points of existing measurement tools and infrastructure. A web-form was set-up by Cesnet to help the collection of the tools and infrastructures and their description. Several tools were identified as tools of interest for this task (BWCTL, NDT, OWAMP, CNM, MonALISA, SCAMPI, Analytes, nemo, Stagger and nav). The State-of-the-art task investigates as well the relevant work done within some standardisation bodies.
"Tool evaluation tasks" aims at evaluating more in details the tools which could potentially be re-used by JRA1. This task has already identified several tools and allocate their evaluation to partners. Those tools will be technically evaluated following evaluation guidelines provided by the activity.
The "General Framework design" team has started to work on different high level designs which can be of use for the activity. It has started by having a look at the Internet 2 piPEs initiative, the GN1 perfmonit initiative and the JINI project. They are working on a document describing the pros and the cons of different architectures and on a document about low level uses cases. This group also had a meeting with Internet2 piPEs in Brussels and is currently discussing with them about a joint document describing either a joint architecture or how both (EU and US) architecture could be inter-operable as quite a lot of projects using our network infrastructures are spread across both Europe and the United State.
A face-to-face Work-Item Leader meeting was held in Paris on the 2nd of September. During this meeting was discussed the organisation of the activity, the coordination between the WIs, the collaboration with other activities and the kick off meeting. A two day kick-off meeting was held in Lisbon (Portugal) on the 29th and 30th of September. Twenty four people from seventeen partners attended this meeting. During this meeting, general presentations on the activity and work-item were given. Dedicated presentation and discussion time for the WI1 - Requirement and the WI2 - Design were provided.
