[edit]
What is the goal of the MDM Pilot?
The Multi-Domain Monitoring service enables a user to gain an ubiquitous access to a set of network performance data or to perform network monitoring actions across different network domains. The MDM relies on perfSONAR web-services and GEANT2 visualisation tools to provide the access to those data.
The Pilot is the first stage into rolling-out the MDM service into operations. It will be used to evaluate the MDM service and its support. The MDM service support will target the deployment, the operation and the use of the MDM service.
[edit]
What functionalities will be offered during the Pilot?
The list of functionalities provided during the pilot is the following: historical L3 link utilisation and L3 link capacity, on-demand looking glass show commands type, historical and on-demand throughput tests, historical delay information, L2 status (for the NRENs supporting one of the followig project: LHC, DEISA, Express) and the capability of discovering what functionality is offered by which NREN.
[edit]
Why are these functionalities offered?
Those functionalities have been identified by the NOC and PERT as useful and important when investigating an incident.
[edit]
Who is taking part to the Pilot?
- GARR, GEANT, Hungarnet, PSNC, SWITCH
- FCCN will be using a Fully Managed Service (FMS - the web-services are installed and system administered for them).
[edit]
What support will be offered?
The support will be provided during normal working hours (to be specified).
- The Level1 Support (Service Desk function) is operated by a distributed set of SA3 WI-15 members (members of JRA1 in project year 3). It serves as primary user contact for the MDM services and can be regarded as Incident Management in terms of ITIL.
- The Level2 Support is operated by the administrators of the domain where the boxes have been deployed (the Hades tool, Hades MA and BWCTL MP will be administered and operated by DFN Erlangen). It is responsible for running the services in the participating networks and can be regarded as part of Problem Management in terms of ITIL.
- The Level3 Support is operated by SA3 WI-15 members (JRA1 service and tool developers). It deals with answering more detailed questions of services and tools and provides sotware and documentation updates. It is part of Problem Management in terms of ITIL. Please note that the tree levels do not necessarily operate in a hierarchy, but that incidents can be directly forwarded from the Service Desk to the Level3 support.
- The servers to host the services for the pilot will be provided by the GÉANT2 project.

Notes:
- Every arrow means that the specific measurement is set up.
- On the overview map not all available measurements are shown!
- A white arrow means, that the measurement is configured, but no data is available. This is in most cases related to firewall or network configuration issues.
- A grey arrow means, that data is available, but is a few hours old.
