Register now for the 2012 Workshop on Performing Arts Production over Advanced Networks, hosted by Internet2 and New World Symphony, March 4–6, in sunny Miami Beach, FL. Explore in depth the elements needed to do everything from simple one-on-one interactions to large-scale stage productions and distance learning via advanced networks.
The workshop is designed for an audience of educators, technologists, administrators, deans, CIOs and all interested parties are invited to attend.
Steve Wolff, Internet technology pioneer and Interim VP and CTO of Internet2, will present a talk at the 2012 Network and Distributed System Security Symposium (NDSS) on February 7. Steve will discuss how needs are quickly emerging for next-generation security applications to be deployed across next-generation networks—like Internet2’s new national 100 GigE network—and will highlight Internet2 research support programs that give researchers access to the most advanced network testbed available.
The Call for Participation for the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting is open! Submissions are being accepted for Session Proposals, Working Meetings, and Sponsors. The meeting theme is "The Internet2 Community: Building the Next Innovation Platform Together." The program will focus on how the Internet2 Community is reclaiming the leadership of ground-breaking innovations, brought about through the implementation of a 100G network, revolutionary new network technologies and opportunities for services that leverage this innovation platform.The proposal deadline is February 10.

U.S. UCAN issued a call for participation in December, 2011, for the pilot phase of a new affiliate program where participating states will designate affiliate organizations who act as primary contact points for local community anchor institutions (CAIs). Approximately five affiliates will be selected for the pilot phase, and will work with U.S. UCAN to define and provide the kinds of support, guidance, direction, and services to be offered to CAIs.
During the Fall Member Meeting, violinist Marjorie Bagley, University of North Carolina - Greensboro School of Music, Theatre and Dance, and cellist Cheng-Hou Lee, Northern Illinois University School of Music, demonstrated "LOLA" during a track session.The LOLA technology, developed by Conservatorio G. Tartini in Trieste Italy, and the Italian Research and Education Network GARR, is a low latency, audio and videoconferencing technology that enables real-time, simultaneous, live musical performances across long distances over advanced research and education networks.

Universities are making major investments in facilities-based optical networking, driven by the need to support high-end research activities. On Tuesday, January 23, Clemson CIO, Jim Bottum, moderated a discussion on the current landscape from the perspective of researchers, federal R&D leads, and campus/lab CIOs. The community will develop a white paper on consensus recommendations with particular reference to input from CIOs and federal funding agencies.
Speakers include keynote speaker Bill St. Arnaud (Green IT), followed by talks on well-architected networks for major science projects (including Don Middleton of NCAR for climatology and Matthew Trunnell of MIT/Harvard's Broad Institute for genomics), a panel on bootstrapping institutional capabilities (including Gwen Jacobs of Hawaii, Ruth Marinshaw of UNC, and Adam Stone from LBL), and success stories (including Brent Draney of NERSC and Eli Dart of ESnet on the national laboratory side, and Joe Breen of Utah, Ron Hutchins of GA Tech, and Tad Reynales of UCSD's Calit2).

Speakers hail from Caltech, NOAA, Dante, Brookhaven National Lab, the University of Michigan and Fermilab. The action is at SC11 booth #1327. Don't miss it.
Internet2, in collaboration with consortium members, will highlight 100Gbps networking capabilities and applications already developed atop the world’s fastest network to support large-scale science initiatives in four separate demonstrations at SC11—the annual supercomputing conference held Nov. 12–18 in Seattle. The demonstrations will take place at Internet2’s booth #1327 throughout SC11.
"Innovation happens when there is a big playground for creative people. 10G networks are just not a very big playground anymore for data-intensive science," said Dave Lambert, Internet2 CEO and President. "100G links on an 8.8 terabit backbone is the size of playground innovators need to create a wider breadth and depth of innovation. 100G is the first piece of the new dimension of innovation, the next pieces are the applications, engineering, and operations of that network to enable collaboration and speed of innovation."
The Online Trust Alliance has presented InCommon with its 2011 Online Trust Leadership Award in the Excellence in Higher Education category. The award recognizes InCommon for its leadership and commitment to best practices, services and technologies that enhance online trust. Steve Wolff was on hand to accept the award on behalf of InCommon and Internet2.
The Online Trust Alliance (OTA) is a non-profit organization that represents the broad internet ecosystem supporting user choice and control, protection of critical infrastructure, privacy and data governance, and promoting best practices.
Internet2 and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) plan to showcase their new 100 Gigabit per second (Gbps) capabilities at the SC11 conference being held from November 12-18, 2011 in Seattle, Washington.
Internet2 presented and participated in several sessions at the 2011 EDUCAUSE Conference in Philadelphia, October 18–21. Sessions included the CIO Forum, Internet2 Strategic Direction Update and new cloud services, and several sessions highlighting InCommon services and identity management.
Congratulations to the 2011 Internet2 IDEA Award winners: Scott Deal from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and Matthew Burtner from the University of Virginia for Auksalaq, a Telematic Opera; ESnet for On-Demand Secure Circuits and Advance Reservation System (OSCARS); and student research winners Baris Aksanli from the University of California San Diego, for Monitoring and Visualization of Energy consumed by Networks (MAVEN); and Kyung- Hwa Kim, from Columbia University, for DYSWIS.
